Compare Fixed-Term Deposit Rates

Rates are shown only when retrieved from an authorised data provider, with the source, timestamps and a link to the issuer's product terms. US CDs (USD, APY) and Canadian GICs (CAD, annual rate) are never ranked together.

Assumes the rate is fixed for the full term and the deposit is held to maturity. Excludes early-withdrawal penalties, taxes, fees, currency conversion and rate changes on renewal. Simple-interest results assume interest is paid out, not reinvested; issuers may use different day-count conventions. Not a personalised recommendation.

Understanding Fixed-Term Deposits

01

What Is a Certificate of Deposit?

A Certificate of Deposit is a time-deposit product offered by a bank or other eligible deposit-taking institution. A customer places funds with the institution for an agreed term in exchange for interest under specified conditions. The rate, term, minimum deposit, withdrawal restrictions and applicable protections vary by product and institution.

02

How CD Rates Work

The nominal rate is the stated annual interest rate before compounding. The Annual Percentage Yield (APY) reflects the total interest earned over a year once compounding is included, which makes products with different compounding easier to compare. Rates are usually fixed for the term. Interest may be compounded and paid at maturity, or paid out monthly, quarterly or annually. At the maturity date the term ends and the deposit may be paid out or renewed under the issuer's renewal conditions.

03

How to Compare CD Opportunities

Look beyond the headline yield. Compare the effective yield (APY), the term, the minimum deposit, the early-withdrawal penalty, whether you are eligible to open the product, deposit insurance coverage and limits, any fees, and how soon you may need the funds. A higher rate with a long lock-up may not suit short-term liquidity needs.

04

What Happens at Maturity?

Maturity instructions vary by institution. Funds may be transferred, paid out or automatically renewed according to the account agreement and the customer's instructions. Review renewal notices and maturity options before the maturity date — an automatic renewal may be at a different rate and term.

05

Understanding Deposit Protection

Eligible US bank deposits may qualify for FDIC insurance, subject to applicable ownership-category rules and coverage limits; eligibility depends on the issuing institution, product, account ownership and other conditions. For Canadian GICs, eligible deposits may qualify for CDIC or applicable provincial deposit-insurance coverage, subject to the institution, product, ownership category and applicable limits. Not every CD, GIC, brokerage product or investment is insured. Verify coverage at fdic.gov or cdic.ca.

06

Are CDs Right for Every Investor?

CDs may suit certain short- or medium-term savings objectives, but they can involve restricted access to funds, early-withdrawal penalties, inflation risk (returns may not keep pace with prices), reinvestment risk (rates may be lower at renewal) and currency risk for deposits held in a foreign currency. Deposits and market-linked investment products are not interchangeable and carry different risks and protections.

Canadian Visitors

US CDs and Canadian GICs — both open to Canadian investors

Canadian residents can hold both Canadian Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs) and US Certificates of Deposit. US CD rates have generally been higher than comparable Canadian GIC rates, which is why many Canadian savers consider US-dollar deposits alongside their Canadian holdings. The two products differ in issuer, currency, rate conventions, deposit insurance and how they are accessed, so the considerations below are worth reviewing before you choose.

Points to weigh: currency exchange between CAD and USD, FDIC coverage (which applies to the US issuer, not Canadian insurers), US tax reporting for Canadian residents, and each institution's own eligibility rules. Availability of any specific product — including through Caldoun Capital Inc. — is confirmed only after verification of the issuer, the distribution arrangement and applicable law. A GIC rate view will appear in the comparison above only once an authorised Canadian rate source is connected.
